Rollerblading Safely

The recreational activity of Rollerblading has really taken off in Ireland, and offers a real alternative to traditional exercise such as cycling and jogging, for keeping fit and burning the calories. Traditionally rollerblading was seen as a young person’s past time, but it is currently being enjoyed by people from all ages and all walks of life.

RollerbladingLike many sports out there, rollerblading does not come without its risks. High speeds and falls can cause serious injury. When beginning, taking a tumble is par for the course, as some of the staff here in Phoenix Safety, who recently took up rollerblading, can testify to! So in order to decrease your chances of serious injury it is very important to use the proper safety gear. So where should we start?

The most obvious starting point is with the rollerblades themselves. When purchasing them, ensure that they are correct fit (not too big or small) and the wheels are of good quality.

A rollerblade helmet is essential - never rollerblade without one. Ensure that it is the correct fit, is of good quality and that it is secured before you set out on your journey. The interior of the helmet should be padded / cushioned for comfort and protection.

As wrist injuries are the most common injuries associated with rollerblading it is important that wrist guards be worn. They must fit over the hands to absorb the shock of a fall.

Elbow and knee pads should also be worn. Make sure that they fit correctly – not too loose or too tight.

From the above points it is essential that protective equipment is worn. The protective equipment along with some general tips below will, hopefully, ensure an enjoyable and healthy rollerblading experience:Rollerblader

1. Skate on a flat, smooth surface, away from roadways and bicycle lanes.
2. Learn the basics first – forward, stopping, turning and striding.

6. Do not rollerblade at night or during times of poor visibility.
