When it comes to safety nets employers must ensure that:

• The nets are constructed of materials of sufficient strength to catch a falling person or debris.
• Perimeter nets are in position before any work is commenced.
• Nets are hung as close as practicable to the underside of the work area.
• There is sufficient tension and clearance to prevent a falling person contacting any surface or structure below the net.
• Safety nets must only be installed by a competent person (FSET or CSCS card).
• Perimeter nets not greater then 2 m below the working area and at least 2.5 m from the working point.
• Nets need to be stored correctly (dry, shaded areas with good circulation) to avoid damage.
• No combustible materials should not allowed to accumulate in suspended nets.
• No welding/oxy cutting allowed to be carried out above nets.
• Nets require inspection after installation, relocation or repair.
• Nets should not be used in environments where they are exposed to chemicals or heat.
