Answer to Question 3:

Dear Lisa,

With regard to training in the use of pallet trucks

1)   If a motorised type is in operation at your premises then a license is required by the operator, i.e.  You must provide external certification in the use of battery operated pallet trucks.  This type of lift truck is normally overlooked when it comes to training in the work place.  It does not look dangerous or powerful but in fact it is a major cause of accidents.  The areas that would have to be covered as part of the training would be Pre-shift checks recording, Lifting capacities (Most motorised versions have a capability of 1 Ton and some 2 Ton to a height of 3 or 4 meters), Truck Stability, Battery Charging, Vehicle Loading/Unloading, followed by a written and practical test.

2)   If a pump operated pallet truck is in use you are required to cover the pushing and pulling of pallet trucks in Manual Handling Certification.  This can be covered as part of induction training but the trainer must be a certified Manual Handling Instructor.
