Answer to Question 1:

Dear Peter,

The first main construction training should be the FAS Safe Pass which is a requirement of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005. This training is a one day and has an expiration of five years.

Occupational First Aid would also be beneficial. This is a FETAC accredited course with a duration of 3 days. This has an expiration period of 2 years and requires a 1 day refresher course.

Manual Handling is also a course which would be applicable to your company. This can be done two ways. The first way, would be your employees attending a manual handling course, which is a half day course and lasts for three years. The second way would a member of your staff becoming a manual handling instructor. This is a five day course and once the person has qualified he/she can train your employees in house. In most cases this more cost effective.

The Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005 allows the employees to elect a Safety Representative. This course helps the employee to understand health & safety legislation and help them complete their role as a safety representative. This training is a 3day course and should be renewed every 2 years.

Your company must also have controls in place for emergency preparedness including fire safety training. There may also be specific hazards within your activities which would require Construction Skills Certification Scheme CSCS training including the use of certain machinery such as Scaffolding including mobile tower scaffold, Tower crane operation, Slinging/signalling, Telescopic handler operation, Tractor/dozer operation, Mobile crane operation, Crawler crane operation, Articulated dumper operation, Site dumper operation, 180° excavator operation, Mini-digger operation, 360° excavator operation Roof and wall cladding/sheeting, Roof and wall cladding/sheeting and Built-up roof felting, Signing, lighting and guarding on roads Locating under-ground services and Shotfiring.

Other specific training should also include cartridge operated tools, abrasive wheels, safety harness and working at heights and confined space training, forklift operation and the use Mobile Elevated Work Platform training.
