Answer to Question 2:

Hi Noel,

There is no maximum temperature stipulated in legislation. The only guidance for temperature refers to recommended office temperature (19-23).  However, employers still have a duty to protect workers from the physical affects of heat stress. To do this you must carry out a risk assessment, taking the following into account:

  1. Working climate – air temperature, humidity, air movement, proximity to a heat source. Open windows, provide fans, adjust air conditioning etc.
  2. Work rate – the harder someone works, the greater the amount of body heat. Provide mechanical aids or reduce the physical activity, increase frequency of breaks.
  3. Physical health of person – age, build, medical status. Provide cool drinking water and increase frequency of breaks for employees.
  4. Clothing and PPE – may affect temperature regulation of body. Consider relaxed clothing (so long as it does not impair safety) during these spells.
