The recent hot weather has motivated a lot of us to hit the waterways for the first time this summer, bringing throngs of people to our lakes, rivers and beaches around the country. Inevitably, this has also brought news reports of tragedy on our waterways.

A recent nationally survey revealed that nearly half of Irish Children get sunburned in Ireland on an annual basis. With recent ad campaigns and health promotion initiatives, everyone is aware of the fact the sunburn in childhood and adolescence increases a child's risk of developing skin cancer in later life. So why don't we do something about this? Is it that we revel in the sunshine whenever we get? Are we really aware of the hazards that the sun may present?
