BBQ Safety - Using Propane Gas

The great summer weather is here, but it’s the time of year when people get the urge to start using their barbeques. Whether at a work, social or family function, the following tips can aid in having a safe event.

Health & Safety Tips:

  • The site chosen for the barbeque should be level and located away from any shrubs, trees, tents or anything else which may catch fire. This also means that the barbeque must be located in an area away from the main body of people and if possible away from any strong draughts.
  • The barbeque itself must be structurally stable and at sufficient height that it can be used safely without excessive bending or leaning over the grill.
  • Any gas which is used as fuel should be kite mark approved and comply with relevant standards. Manufacturers instructions supplied with the gas bottle should be followed. The gas cylinders must be stored in a well ventilated area, which may be outdoors but away from fires.
  • If charcoal is used then only recommended materials must be used and the manufacturer’s instructions on how to light them must be followed.
  • On lighting the barbeque it is essential that all fuels and matches are kept well away from the fire. It is also important that any flammable liquids are not poured onto the coals, even if they look to have gone out, as there is a potential hazard in that the fire could flare up, resulting in fatal burns.
  • All persons working at the barbeque should each know their particular role and it is also advisable that long hair is tied back and long flowing clothing is avoided. It is suggested that protective clothing is worn both for the purpose of hygiene and safety.
  • Once the barbeque is in progress it is important that all children and pets are kept well away from the area of the barbecue, as children are often particularly curious as to what is happening.
  • If any burns or scalds do occur it is advisable to act quickly by placing the injury under cold running water or immersing in water. For all burns and scalds on young children, or if the injury is severe then seek medical advice immediately. Always have a First Aid Kit on site.
