Answer to Question 1:

Dear Linda,

Floors need to have enough grip for people to walk safely.  Grip is measured as ‘Coefficient of Friction’ (CoF).  In accordance with the HSE (UK)  Guidelines; A CoF of 0.36 or more on dry or wet surfaces indicates satisfactory slip resistance.  Suppliers of floor coverings should be able to provide you with information on their products’ coefficients of friction.  It is important to note that the Coefficient of friction figures that are given to you should relate to the floor as it is installed not ex-factory.  Many floor surfaces are treated or buffed on installation and this dramatically changes their grip.  Other factors would also have to be considered here for your creche, such as durability and hygiene issues of the floor coverings.  Ask your supplier to tell you where else that floor surface has been used, whether it been used in a creche environment before.
