Answer to Question 2: Dear Sean, I would advise that you take a few precautionary steps before beginning lessons. Firstly locate an Equestrian Centre near you and ensure they are a recognised training centre. This will mean that they are fully insured, have qualified instructors and that their ponies and horses are healthy and are being correctly cared for. Once you have found and selected a centre enquire as to what their minimum age requirement is for starting as a beginner. You didn't mention the age of your child in your question but most reputable Equestrian Centres will require that children be 6 years of age. Different Equestrian Centres will vary in their requirement. They may be permitted to take part in what are known as 'lead-rein' lessons up to the minimum age where they will be lead by another person for the duration of the lesson. When you are locating a centre take a look around at the one you have chosen. Ensure that you are happy with the condition of the animals there and the level of knowledge of the staff. Secondly, ensure your child has the correct equipment for her lesson. Most Equestrian Centres are happy to provide a riding hat for a lesson so you can make sure that your daughter will continue with the hobby before investing in a hat. They vary in price but usually start around €45. A good pair of boots is also advisable for participating in a lesson. Footwear worn for riding should have a flat heel and not be a smooth surface like the soles of trainers as these can slip through the stirrup causing the foot to become wedged which is unsafe. Another piece of equipment that can be gotten at a later date, or sooner depending on the advice of the instructor, is a back protector. Again, these can be purchased from Riding Schools, Saddlery stores and equestrian supply website. It is extremely important however that the child (or any rider for that matter) is fitted for this piece of protective wear so unless you know the exact size you require I would advise going to a professional for a fitting.
