Signing, Lighting and Guarding at Roadworks

 

Course Aim:

This is a three day course designed to train course participants to be competent to plan, organise, direct and manage the safe flow of traffic through roadworks, in both rural and urban situations with the minimum of delay and risk to other road users.

This training is mandatory under the Safety Health & Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2006. After the 1st July 2009 it will be compulsory to have a CSCS Signing Lighting and Guarding card holder on all roadworks situations.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • List the relevant legislation.
  • Describe signs and devices used on roadworks.
  • Describe static and semi-static operations.
  • List the requirements for the installation of traffic management.
  • Read and describe the traffic layouts set out in “Chapter 8” & “Guidance for the Control and Management of Traffic of Roadworks”.
  • Install, maintain & remove signs and devices used on roadworks.
  • Create and maintain site records.

Training Methods:

Classroom presentation on multimedia, supplemented by videos, and flipchart discussions throughout the course. Course handouts, training records, evaluation forms are also used. Approximately 50% of the course will be on road practical.

Who should attend?

Managers and supervisors who are required to plan, organise, direct and manage any roadworks.

Certification:

FÁS issued Construction Skills Certification (CSCS) card.

Course Attendance:

  • Maximum of 8 participants (FÁS regulations)
  • 1 instructor per 4 participants max
  • Minimum of 4 participants (FÁS Regulations)
  • 3 day duration
