Course Aim:
This Tool Box Talk will provide participants with the necessary information and
awareness of the risks associated with the handling and disposal of
syringes/needlesticks.
Course Objectives:
On completion participants will be able to:
- Identify the correct procedures for handling/disposing of syringes.
- Describe the diseases commonly associated with used syringes.
- Examine the procedures for collecting, handling, storing and disposing of
syringes.
- Describe the organisation’s method for safe collection and disposal (the
tool box talk should be tailored to your specific procedures).
Course Programme:
- Legislation
- Syringes and their component/uses
- Hazards of Collection and Disposal of Syringes i.e. Physical, Biological,
Psychosocial
- Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Prevention of infections – Vaccinations/PPE/Safe Disposal
- What to do if you receive a needle stick injury.
- Organisations Safe Disposal Method (tailored)
- Summary
Who Should Attend?
All those who are exposed to needlesticks/syringes or sharps as part of their work.
This practical course will make employees aware of the hazards involved in
handling syringes and the control measures that are available.
Assessment & Certification:
All of those who attend and successfully complete the practical elements will
receive a Phoenix Safety certificate which is valid for 3 years.
Course Attendance:
- Maximum of 15 participants.
- ½ day duration i.e. 2 X 1.5 hr sessions
